“Schönes Hotel mit toller Lage über einer großartigen Stadt.”
The hotel sits on the Sonnenberg, literally meaning sunshine from morning to evening, and offers a sweeping view over most of Lucerne and two parts of Lake Lucerne, with the surrounding mountains—especially Pilatus—providing an impressive backdrop. Breakfast was excellent and the staff everywhere were more than helpful. A funicular (Bähnle) runs from the hotel to Lucerne and Kriens during the day, and guests with the hotel card can ride it for free, which is great for kids. At the Kriens terminus, a 5‑minute walk brings you to the line 1 bus stop that takes you in a few minutes to Lucerne’s central station, also free with the card. We parked our car at the hotel upon arrival and used the funicular and bus to get around the city without hassle. Even after checkout, the card stayed valid, letting us leave our car at the hotel, ride to Kriens, and in about 15 minutes reach the valley station of Pilatus, where a discount applied. The cable car climbs over three stations to more than 2100 m, and from Pilatus you can see almost all of Lake Lucerne on a clear day—every franc well spent. We had nothing to complain about; not having to deal with traffic in our own car made the whole trip truly relaxed.
