“A Beautiful Boutique Hotel in the Heart of Fenghuang”
This charming, family‑run hotel, known as Phoenix Ancient Riverside Courtyard Hotel or Shuxi Homestay, feels like a boutique gem: small, beautiful, full of character, and every detail of the décor shows personal care. Located inside the ancient walled city near the river, it blends traditional architecture with thoughtful restoration. Both rooms we stayed in were delightful, with private facilities that outshine many pricier chains, and we even received upgrades to king rooms for extra space after exploring the riverside. The property centers around a lovely courtyard and has been restored with exceptional attention to detail. What truly distinguishes it is the owners’ hospitality; they go out of their way to help guests enjoy their stay, offering a warm welcome, a helpful introduction to the city, and a hand‑drawn map (now out of print) that added a memorable personal touch. Breakfast was another highlight: alongside fresh orange juice, coffee, yoghurt, fruit, hard‑boiled eggs, and bread, we enjoyed traditional Chinese dishes featuring local specialties, giving us a genuine taste of the area. Since vehicles can’t enter the walled city, arriving and departing could have been tricky, but the owners arranged to meet our taxi on arrival and accompany us on departure, making both transfers smooth. They also organized a pickup from the local railway station at a very reasonable price. The only downside was that we couldn’t stay longer.
