“Incredible, thoroughly enjoyable and I'm still full from that massive breakfast!”
Baton Suite is undoubtedly a luxury destination. The daily breakfast was prepared with exceptional care and flavors, making us want to research how to make the purple sweet potato pottage and the sauce served with the wagyu (mouth‑watering!). The staff were kind and helpful, always ready to assist with any questions. Unfortunately, the clouds didn’t clear long enough at night for us to participate in the stargazing service, so we’ll have to return another day. I would happily stay again and again. This is not a complaint but advice for future travellers: the island is remote, which was a nice end to a hectic two weeks on Honshuu. We made a mistake by not realizing that a formal International Driver’s Permit is required to rent a car, so we relied on taxis. That mistake was 100 % ours. You should avoid the same mistake; a hire car would have made things easier, especially to get to a convenience store off‑island and return with supplies (onshore stores are limited, mostly souvenirs rather than daily food items). Uber and Go won’t work for booking a car while on Kouri Island. However, whenever we needed a taxi we planned in advance and asked the front desk for help, and it was absolutely fine (Uber and Go worked off‑island for return legs). It was a good way to force my Type A personality to slow down, and if you get a chance you can stroll down to the local t‑shirt designer called Bonmu, who had a t‑shirt for sale that said “go with the flow”. The universe was definitely telling me to chill out on Kouri!
