“Avoid - for the rates this hotel charges, there are much better options in the surroundings”
The surroundings of the hotel are great. I would strongly recommend avoiding this property. It holds just a 3-star rating on Google, a far cry from the 5 stars listed . The photos on the booking site appear to be several years out of date — the property is poorly maintained and bears little resemblance to what is advertised. We cancelled our reservation on the spot upon arrival. Despite the cancellation policy entitling us to a 50% refund, the hotel insisted the full amount had already been charged to our credit card and refused to issue any reimbursement
The hotel simply has nothing appealing about it; the buildings and rooms feel dated, and the management and staff seem clueless. The food is absurdly French and pricey, and the chef should just stick to dishes within his comfort zone. It’s grossly overpriced and of very poor quality, and when I raised these issues they offered no discount despite paying roughly €450 per night for two nights. Since they refused any price reduction, I’m leaving this warning—stay away!!

We enjoyed a one‑of‑a‑kind stay at the Karanda Chalet of the Kalundewa Retreat, tucked perfectly into the surrounding nature and with staff who went out of their way to meet every request; day trips to Sigirya were also very convenient. Still, being in a bird‑conservation area meant the ambient noise was high, and having monkeys and flying foxes right above the glass chalet felt a bit unsettling at times.
“In occasione mancata”
The setting was surrounded by nature, far from everything, but it was overpriced, they never refreshed the room with the breakfast plates, ignored my pre‑arrival email, we asked for two beers and none were available, and the things we requested seemed like basic expectations.
“This will be a fantastic hotel once work has been completed”
The location is fantastic, especially for bird watchers, and the food was very good. The staff were exceptional and the bed was comfortable. However, the place needs a deep clean and major investment to reach standard. I think the new management plans to do that. Until then, it’s grubby—bathroom walls, glass, and blinds look dirty.
