“Great location and great hostel to stay at if you’re planning to explore the area!”
We really enjoyed our stay at Aldo’s Guest House! I booked a dorm bed for the first night while waiting for my partner, but they gave me a private room from the start at dorm price, which was great. The private room had its own bathroom (many rooms and even dorms have one). The hostel is generally clean. My only disappointment was that some travelers left the kitchen messy and didn’t wash their dishes. There are several communal areas where you can socialize or find a quiet spot. The rooftop terrace has beanbags, a sunny table for morning coffee, and a lounge next to the kitchen. The vibe is friendly, with travelers often organizing hikes for the next days. If you’re solo and want hiking partners, this is a good spot. Free breakfast is a highlight: self‑service with fresh bread, fruit, avocado, eggs, tea, and coffee each morning, which is a nice start before a hike. I also liked the fridge and shelves where people can leave free food for others, and a box for free items. The staff is very helpful and knows a lot about hiking locally, can advise on trails, explain how to catch colectivos, and help plan trips. They speak enough English for the job, which isn’t always the case in Peru. You can book tours and rent hiking/camping gear directly through the hostel, often at reasonable prices, and they seem to have good connections with reliable companies. We booked the Santa Cruz trek through them and it was GREAT.
There was sometimes a sewage smell from the toilets (in the bedroom and at Reception). Also, our first room faced the street, so the noise was loud both day and night with car horns, alarms, and people talking outside; if you’re a light sleeper, ask for a room away from the street. Another area to improve is the organization of room bookings for travelers returning from multi‑day hikes. The hostel offers free luggage storage while you’re away, which is very convenient. We had told them before leaving for the Santa Cruz trek that we’d need a room when we returned, but that wasn’t recorded. When we came back, it took effort to arrange a private room, and we ended up with two single beds instead of a double. During the week, I saw other travelers confused about their room bookings when returning from hikes. The laundry guy comes daily, and you get your laundry within 24 hours for 5 soles/kg. Make sure to weigh your bag or confirm the price beforehand, as he tried to charge us more, claiming our clothes were very dirty (which wasn’t true). Despite these small issues, we really enjoyed our stay and would happily return. Aldo’s has a great location, welcoming staff, lovely communal spaces, a generous breakfast, and an excellent setup for hikers. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you’re visiting the area to explore the mountains and meet other travelers.
