“Magical - a quiet, serene and quite lovely experience”
We discovered this hotel after our booking for a night at Samode Bagh was cancelled even though we had paid in advance, so we suddenly needed a place between Jaipur and Mandawa. It turned out to be a magical solution. It’s not common to stay in an ancient palace as the only guests for a night, and the experience was surreal. Leaving an unpromising street through a gate into beautiful grounds, we were greeted by an astonishing building and an immediate sense of peace. Surrounded by craggy hills, old fort remnants, and bird songs, we spent a happy late afternoon and morning exploring and relaxing on the huge upper terrace. After the bustle of Jaipur it was perfect—like stepping back in time; a little faded but still beautiful, romantic, and gentle. We were served a delicious dinner and breakfast in the dining room and borrowed a yoga mat to enjoy the private terrace in front of our lovely room, with views of the gardens at the front of the hotel. For some reason this historic palace isn’t well known to touring groups—there were more before Covid—but it’s an amazing find and would be a great stop on the way back from Jaipur to Delhi. The only reason I gave it 9 instead of 10 is that, probably because it was so quiet when we were there, the pool’s fountains weren’t working, there were no towels or cushions on the lounge chairs, and the hotel felt slightly closed down.
