The ryokan was traditional and very authentic, perfect for a quiet stay, and the meals were hearty and delicious, though getting there without a car is quite tough.
“設備面よりお食事とお風呂重視”
The dinner was packed with various ingredients and very tasty, and being able to bathe 24 hours a day was great. The staff were very polite, which I appreciated. On the downside, the road to the ryokan was narrow, so I took a wrong turn; for car travelers, I wish there had been prior guidance on the best approach. The toilet seat in the room wasn’t firmly attached, making it wobbly. The sink water was initially brown, so that should be fixed. There was no outlet in the bathroom, so I couldn’t use my hair dryer there, which was inconvenient.
“Taste of home”
Yanagiya is a family ryokan perched in the mountains near Chichibu, and its remote setting makes it a bit hard to reach without a vehicle, yet that isolation gives the place an extraordinary vibe at night, surrounded by forest where deer families can be seen. The service, especially dinner and breakfast, was handled with the meticulous care that Japan is known for. I especially liked how the ingredients and dishes were prepared—no frills, just precise and refined, evoking nostalgia and home. The facilities are all what you expect from a ryokan, though you can notice its age; everything is impeccably clean, and those little signs of wear add to the charm. The rooms are decoratively simple yet comfortably cozy. Inside, the ryokan feels extremely calm, serene, and restful—ideal after a day of exploring and hiking the nearby mountains. The owners were extraordinary and warm during my stay. If I had to sum up this ryokan’s personality, I’d say it’s one of the most human and humble places I’ve ever felt at home, and I’ll definitely return on my next trip to the area. Thank you!
