We deliberately picked a spot on the far side of the lake and it lived up to all our expectations, offering a fantastic view of Mount Fuji. The staff were exceptionally kind and helpful, the best service we’ve had during our entire trip to Japan. We couldn’t be happier.

The best part was the staff – truly very helpful and friendly. The onsen was also clean, beautiful, and very warm. The room and furnishings were extremely old; the couch was completely sagging and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the rest of the property was clearly outdated and not very pleasant.

The location was great, but the hotel was terribly poorly maintained and barely met the minimum acceptable standards, especially for a place that was among the more expensive ones we stayed at. The open lounge at the back, a newer addition, offered a beautiful view of Mt Fuji. The toilet piping and one of the beds were held together with duct tape. The air conditioner in our room was also taped up (with paper tape) but rattled so badly that we had to sleep without it, which was not ideal when temperatures were above 30 °C. The bed was hard and there were only two extremely thin pillows – we asked for more, but they were only reluctantly supplied. The walls were scuffed, had holes in places and dirty fingerprints. The shower was so tiny it was extremely difficult to maneuver in. The room wasn’t serviced during our stay. The door in one of the rooms was falling apart and the walls were very thin.

The old‑style building was surprisingly spotless inside, making my stay very comfortable, and getting a private onsen for an hour at this price felt like a real bargain; the hotel and its surroundings weren’t crowded, and having a convenience store and eateries nearby was handy and left me satisfied. The only downside was that the blinds were loose, so early morning sun flooded the room and made it overly bright.
