The staff were friendly, the service was good, the location had stunning views, and the food was excellent too. Nothing was wrong; everything was great 👍.

This place is great for walkers or countryside explorers, especially if you’re looking for a spirited stay with character. The views from rooms one, two, three, and four are absolutely stunning. The pub and canteen are first‑class, though the portions are honestly too large. The stables bar’s décor and vibe are very cool, and it’s rare to find a place that plays decent music instead of a barrage of modern computer sounds; you can really feel the history there. The location is a huge plus because it sits right at the start of several varied and interesting walks. The hotel itself is a large old stone building that’s impressive as a structure. The rooms are spacious, and from rooms one and four you get the added benefit of windows on two sides of the main room. The downside is that the rooms are generally rundown in terms of facilities. If you need executive luxury, this isn’t the place for you, but if you like spirited places with certain flaws, you’ll be very happy here. In extreme cold or hot weather, the rooms can be uncomfortable because insulation is virtually nonexistent and the heater is a somewhat overpowering giant wall‑fan heater. The settings on it seem broken and hard to control, but when it works it pumps a lot of heat. In very cold weather, even that heater can’t compete with the cold air that seeps through the badly insulated windows. In very hot weather, the opposite problem occurs because the sun bakes the rooms and there’s little ventilation. The paintwork and finish of the rooms are definitely overdue for renewal.

The location is obviously fabulous. Our room (room 1) had a gorgeous view and a lovely spot to sit with a brew overlooking it. The room was clean and had everything we needed for the night, including a nice bath. Yes, the building’s exterior needs TLC, and some parts of the room are old, so you have to be open‑minded about certain things. The current owners are doing great work renovating it. Nothing ruined our stay. The staff were so lovely and the welcome was warm. Great food in the Stables Bar next door too. We managed to get free parking, which is a bonus. Straight onto the Monsal Trail, which is why we booked. We slept well and loved our time here. We hope to return in the future.

We had a very nice night at the Monsal Head. The room was spacious and comfortable with a wonderful view over the valley. It was very quiet and very clean. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We had some great pancakes for breakfast and a nice dinner in the stables bar.
