“Don Som: come vivere un' esperienza da viaggiatore”

The stay at Don Som Riverside Guesthouse turned out to be a truly beautiful and intense experience. The place is well maintained, surrounded by a garden filled with flowers, plants, and even a chicken and buffalo farm. Spending time there and noticing the little details was wonderful. The best moments were with Sander and Tanoi, listening to their stories about life in Laos and the tales of local residents. My family joined the youth center activities next to the guesthouse; it was intense and marvelous: we played with the kids and my daughter even played soccer with the local team. It remains the most cherished memory I have from Laos—smiles, walks, and brief exchanges with the village elders.

“Peaceful and relaxing”

The location is stunningly peaceful, and the sunrise from the balcony is breathtaking. The staff were excellent, informative, and friendly. The island itself is great, with plenty of nice walks, making it perfect for a quiet stay.

“Supurb location and owners / staff”

The owners are fantastic—a Lao/Dutch couple who have invested a lot of effort into community projects over the past 20 years. The accommodation, restaurant, and bar—only one on Don Som Island—offers an incredible view of Mekong’s activities. You can simply relax on hammocks, have a beer, go on a bait trip, swim on the beach, take a cooking class, or rent scooters to explore the island (awesome and cheap!). Don Som Island is a rural area—about 17 x 3 k, mainly farmers, very friendly—it’s something special. I’ve been to 68 countries and over 1000 stays; go there! An unfair question in a way: during peak summer it’s hot—you can survive the day fine with plenty of shade, but if you’re an average sleeper, you might suffer from the lack of air conditioning at night. I knew this, accepted less sleep, and never regretted going during the hot season. There isn’t much else to improve—maybe offer a choice between a hard big pillow (standard) and a soft one for the double bed. I’m clutching at straws, but it’s a great place! Something different—give it a try!

The location is beautiful, the staff great, and the vibe relaxing and chill. If you’re looking to just forget the world, you’ll find it hard to beat this place. Sander and Ben are two of the nicest people you could meet—polite and very helpful. Leaving.
