“Not angry, just disappointed.”
The pictures made the hotel look lovely, and the lower‑level staff (car‑park guy, porters, bar staff) were polite and friendly—something the reception could learn from. The reception staff, however, could have done better. We were told upon arrival that our reservation had been cancelled because of an invalid credit card (the one I always use on B.com); they offered us to rebook on the app with a warning that the daily rate had changed, or to accept a direct booking at a reduced price of $60 (my original booking was now showing as cancelled on B.com, so I couldn’t see the original rate). We accepted the offer. The room was large but not as clean as it should be: the bed was clean, but the bedside unit was hanging off the wall; the carpet was faded and worn, the windows were filthy, and although the bathroom had been wiped, the corners were dirty and no detail was attended to. We were not told at reception about a problem with the pool lighting, so when we returned from dinner expecting to use the rooftop infinity pool at night, the rooftop barman informed us that the lights were broken and we couldn’t use it. The towels in the room were tiny. Breakfast had no buffet; the omelette and sausage were good but not what was advertised. This should have been our best stay, a touch of luxury for our final evening, but it was simply below par and disappointing. We would have preferred Orchid Villa in Negombo instead.
