The host replies quickly, and it’s only 20 minutes by car to Bilbao, Hernik, and Gasterugache. The layout is odd—rooms on the second floor while the host lives on the first, so it feels awkward to leave the room. The area marked as a barbecue yard is unkempt, full of trash and old items, and the grill is just a pile of bricks. Dogs are in a cage right at the entrance and bark loudly whenever you pass. Breakfast consists of cucumbers, coffee, and toast.

The spot is ideal if you’re after peace, and the owner is very kind. There’s no TV in the bedroom for the kids to keep busy, and the room door lacks a latch.

We stayed here while hiking the Camino del Norte. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. We relaxed beside a beautiful river on the property. Breakfast was good with nice strong coffee. All good.
