The spot was good, and breakfast offered a decent mix of hot and cold dishes plus pastries. The room, however, felt cramped for the price; a small window looked out onto a damp flat roof and a solid wall. The Jacuzzi was boarded up, which was a let‑down, and the pool was freezing cold, as I mentioned.

The hotel’s location offers great views of South beach and Caldey Island. The bed’s mattress had reached the end of its life, and rolling to the edge was quite uncomfortable.

The staff were lovely, and the breakfast room team were attentive without being overbearing, which was perfect. The room itself was clean and smart. The corridor doors slammed hard; a bit of padding might help. On Sunday at 8 am, the cleaning crew were very loud.
