A short history
Bentota began as an ancient temple outpost and colonial rest stop along the southern trade road between Colombo and Galle. Dutch forces built a small fort and rest house near the river mouth in the 17th century.In 1969, the Sri Lankan government chose Bentota to pioneer planned beach tourism. Architect Geoffrey Bawa designed the main resort complex, establishing tropical modernism as the dominant design voice of the region.
