Overview
Destin sits on a narrow peninsula between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Fine Appalachian quartz gives the shore its chalk-white sand and reflects heat even in July. Deep ocean water approaches closer to the coast here than anywhere else along Florida's Gulf Coast, which keeps charter boats active year-round. Expect heavy seasonal vehicle traffic along US Route 98, as highway driving is mandatory for almost every meal and errand.
Airport arrival
Fly into Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) for a 25-minute drive south across the bay. Pensacola (PNS) is 50 miles west and adds an hour of driving.
Geological record
The sand is pure ground quartz washed down from the Appalachian Mountains over millennia. It does not heat up under direct summer sunlight.

The current at Crab Island is strong during tide changes. Swim only at high tide when water is clear blue.
- Beach flag warnings
Florida uses colored flags on beaches. Double red flags mean water is closed to swimming due to dangerous rip currents.
- Alcohol restrictions
Glass containers are strictly prohibited on all beaches. Crab Island vendors are banned from selling alcohol directly.
