introduction
Olomouc is Moravia's historic capital, packed into a walkable core ringed by 19th-century parks. A major university keeps prices grounded and bars lively despite the formal grand Baroque squares. You can walk across the old town in twenty minutes, passing six monumental fountains and a monumental plague column. Expect lower crowd density than Prague with an equally dense architectural footprint.
UNESCO recognition
The Holy Trinity Column on Horní Náměstí is a 35-metre Baroque monument. It was consecrated in 1754 with Empress Maria Theresa in attendance.
The clock tower secret
The astronomical clock on the town hall was rebuilt under communist rule in the 1950s. It features mosaic workers and scientists instead of traditional saints.

Olomouc is famous for Olomoucké tvarůžky, a naturally ripened sour milk cheese with a pungent aroma and low fat content. Locals eat it raw with dark bread and butter, fried in beer batter, or melted over local meat dishes. You can buy authentic packages at the dedicated specialty shop Tvarůžková prodejna on Horní Náměstí.Moravian culinary culture emphasizes hearty meals served alongside unpasteurized lager or local white wine. Microbreweries in the city center offer fresh unfiltered beers paired with Moravian pub classics like pork knee and bramboráky (potato pancakes).

In response, Olomouc fortified itself into an imperial bastion, which led to the construction of grand Baroque monuments and defensive structures still visible today.
