A short history
Settlers gathered along Brushy Creek in the 1840s where a large round limestone rock marked a low-water wagon crossing. The post office was established under the name Round Rock in 1854, taking its name from that river landmark, and the town officially incorporated in 1877. The arrival of the International-Great Northern Railroad shifted commercial growth east to the current downtown core. In 1878, outlaw Sam Bass died in Round Rock after a shootout with Texas Rangers. During the late twentieth century, tech giant Dell established its headquarters here, transforming the ranching town into a suburban tech powerhouse.
