The variety of hot springs was impressive, and although the building itself didn’t look brand‑new, the cleanliness and upkeep were meticulous throughout.

Everything was satisfactory, the facilities were very pleasant, even better than expected. The balcony overlooking the garden was perfect, letting me recover well after a tiring journey. The staff were always friendly, even if they only spoke Japanese, and everyone was helpful. There were plenty of cleaning supplies available. The futon was very comfortable. The private bathroom was my highlight—larger and separate from the toilet. The hotel restaurant served simple Japanese dishes that were always tasty. The main drawback was the language barrier; it was hard to ask questions without speaking Japanese, and I doubt the staff will acquire English skills soon since the main clientele are locals. I might return once I improve my Japanese, but overall I still enjoyed the experience despite the language barrier.

The staff, especially the manager, were very helpful, kind, and patient with us. The rooms were clean, well lit, large, and decorated nicely. Bathrooms were roomy, well appointed with multi‑function toilets, and stocked with toiletries. We loved the separate shower/tub room! We enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfasts. It was our first time at a ryokan, so we had to learn the protocols for using the communal hot spring baths, but people were patient with us and the baths were wonderful. The beds were very hard and uncomfortable, so we didn’t sleep very well. Most patrons seemed to be locals using the hot spring baths, or visiting Japanese, so there was no information provided in English about the protocols for using the bath facilities, meals, and local information about restaurants, shops, trains, taxis, etc. None of the staff spoke English, but the manager had a translator app that was helpful. Luckily, our son speaks some Japanese and was able to assist with translation, but it would be much easier to have some English printed information available. We did have trouble getting our luggage sent to the airport when we departed, which we learned has to be sent two days prior to departure.

The location was great—a perfect walk from the train station if you travel light, and there were no other foreign tourists around. The breakfast was decent, although I’ve had much better elsewhere in Japan. The price was the issue; this wasn’t a $300USD/night place. The facilities weren’t all that nice. I would stay there again if it were half that price. Not sure why it was priced as such, perhaps it was part of the package.
