The staff were unbelievably friendly and helpful. The onsen is quite geographically remote, but when we arrived to find the onsite restaurant closed, they made the decision to put together a delicious meal for us. It’s a bit tired and run down and in need of some maintenance and general care. It could be easily brought back to a beautiful facility with a little input from the owner

I was satisfied with the food and enjoyed a tasty beer; the conversation with the older gentleman at dinner was also fun. On the first day, there were no sheets.

The inn is charming, with a lovely building and a great location. The onsen offers both outdoor and indoor baths with forest views, a sauna, and a cold plunge pool. We went out to a nearby town for dinner the first night because we hadn't arranged meals and none were available on short notice. On the second night, the owners prepared a delicious meal, and breakfast was also fantastic. The location is ideal for exploring Kakunodate, Lake Tazawa, and Dakigaeri Gorge, all of which are stunning. There wasn’t an en suite shower, but that wasn’t a big problem since we used the onsen. Traditional futons were a bit hard for my western back, but the rooms were really lovely and beautifully preserved. Heavy winter doonas in early autumn were way too hot, but this seems standard across Japan. Parts of the building are getting a bit tired, which only added to the charm. Very authentic overall.

We spent one night. The room was typically Japanese. It was very quiet, and we slept very well. The onsen was fairly traditional. Although I didn’t speak English, the front desk person was very kind to us.
