The location was great, but the reception staff were rude and the hotel looked dirty, clearly needing a full refurbishment. My room sat right next to the reception, so I could hear people coming and going, and the bed was rock hard.

I loved the old‑world vibe and the quirky room, the bed was comfy and the place stayed clean; I also enjoyed the Nespresso machine. It would have been better if the hotel could hold luggage, because I had to use Stasher instead.

We had a lovely stay; the staff were friendly and the room was great, with small touches that added comfort. The building sits in the middle of York, a prime spot, and its historic beauty matched the city’s rich past. Breakfast fell short of expectations; the website and staff explained it would be a simple bag‑to‑go in the morning, so a fresh croissant from a local bakery would have been a nice addition.

The hotel was wonderfully quirky and the staff greeted us warmly. However, finding the entrance down an alley from the city center was a challenge when we arrived.
