“Una tomadura de pelo”
We went during the low season to Nicaragua and chose this spot in Ometepe because it seemed the most decent option available. The room cost $70 a night even though it had no air conditioning, pool, or breakfast included, which isn’t cheap for Nicaragua. It was a private‑bathroom room, and from the photos I expected a mosquito net or some kind of barrier on the 1.70‑meter wall, but there was none; the wall was just there, so it was scary to use the bathroom at night because it was open and infested with bugs. Every day I had to remove insects from the cistern and sink. It was disgusting and very uncomfortable. The bedroom mosquito nets had holes that let bugs in, and the one on the bed was so short that bugs still slipped under. The mosquitoes bit me. Over three nights they never cleaned the room at all; the receptionist said they only clean when the guest asks, which is a European habit I hadn’t seen elsewhere, but if they say daily cleaning, it should happen. I asked the second day if they had a longer net because bugs were getting in from below, but they ignored me. Another day we asked for at least a spray to kill insects, because sleeping in the jungle with the knowledge that a giant insect could wake you up at any moment was uncomfortable, and they didn’t have one. The restaurant area is pretty, but the place is expensive (beer was 120 córdobas versus the 60‑80 we paid elsewhere), and the pizzas and other items were pricey too. They’re very hippie‑ish to have you showering with spiders crawling up and down the wall, yet they charge like a VIP spot. When they told me yoga classes cost $5, I almost laughed weakly.
