“Es war ein sehr schöner 2-Tages Aufenthalt.”
When I was booking my Morocco tour, I almost lost hope because there were so many desert camps to choose from. I finally found Kalimba Camp on social media; it looks a bit pricier at first glance, but it offers a lot more. I chose a slightly more expensive camp instead of risking a dirty one without air conditioning, as many other guests had experienced. The camp was beautifully decorated and well equipped. Even though the tents are only very sturdy, we had plenty of privacy, and as a woman I never felt uncomfortable for not dressing according to ethnic norms. The staff were friendly and always tried to make our stay as pleasant as possible. We used a camp-arranged airport transfer followed by a camel ride to the camp, and unlike other camps we were told in advance that the camel ride was already included. Dinner was either a 3‑ or 4‑course meal, always delicious. After dinner, a classic music session by the camp staff and sometimes a bonfire followed. Breakfast was also very good and left no room for complaints. The camp also offers a lot of activities; we only chose the 4x4 safari with guide, which showed us many attractions around the entire Erg Chebbi desert, and sandboarding was included. The air conditioning only works from about 19 – 7 am, which isn’t a problem because we’re not in the tent during the day and have other activities planned. This is because the batteries are charged by solar power during the day so that we can use the AC at night, and the room cools down very quickly. The slightly higher price is probably due to the excellent dinner, which is also very suitable for European palates. Because our only second language was English, communication was sometimes a bit awkward, although there were camp staff who spoke better English, but you don’t always encounter them.
