I am filing a formal complaint about our recent stay at the Brown Bear Saloon and am demanding a full refund. This is not a public review; I want an official investigation. The accommodation was deeply disappointing and, in our opinion, far below what the listing or price suggested. The rooms above the saloon and the cabin were poorly built, poorly kept, and grossly overpriced for their condition. Our serious concerns included: no Wi‑Fi, no TVs in the rooms or cabin, weak door seals that let in outside air and hallway noise, cheap door locks that made us worry about security, especially for solo travelers or young adults who may not notice such hazards. The cabin had exposed plumbing and electrical, and unpatched wallboard. Large, poorly insulated windows made the rooms uncomfortable. The heating controls were badly designed; the baseboard heater switches were at floor level behind the bed, forcing us to move the bed to use them. The showers were dirty and unmaintained, and none of us felt comfortable using them. Overall, both rooms and cabin were shabby, poorly maintained, and far below the standard we expected for the price. These were not minor inconveniences or cosmetic issues.
“Location was good and it was convenient. I would stay there again.”
I liked the location, but it was pretty loud, though still manageable.
“Rustic, Authentic, and Unusual while Economical.”
I slept on a super comfy memory foam bed that’s great if you prefer a soft mattress, and the motel sits literally above a local biker bar on a remote highway between a creek and scenic mountains—definitely an authentic Alaskan vibe. The Alaska reindeer dogs served at the downstairs bar were delicious and cost about a third of what you’d pay at a cruise port. I was surprised that there’s an elevator upstairs, which is useful for people with mobility issues or heavy luggage, because I expected none; the stairs are metal planks that look like giant cheese graters and are steep, creaky wooden steps. The staff could have been friendlier and seemed clearly partial to locals.
“10 stars she was so nice and we actually came back already and stayed again.”
The views, the amazing host, and the rustic décor were all great, and there was nothing negative.
Although this is not a 5-star resort it makes up for it in so many ways.I am a 50 year Alaskan {now living in AZ). I brought my spouse up for his 1st AK experience. We can stay in a fancy hotel anywhere but this gave him a true taste of AK living.Quaint, a bit rugged, the log cabin, friendly staff and good grub. Nestled along beautiful Cook Inlet. Would definitely stay there again. Everything but an outhouse-Indoor plumbing :). Was not available for a 2nd night!
