“Adequate but needs some upgrades.”

The dinner was tasty and the beds were comfy, but when we asked for a dessert the staff forgot to add it and had to apologize; by then we were done so drinks were removed from the bill. The shower pressure was weak unless you crank the cold tap, the bath handle was loose, the bedside lamp was nailed to a wooden block, and several paint jobs, bathroom seals and tiles were unfinished. Breakfast service was slow and chaotic, with people being served out of order and us waiting while others were still unserved.

The breakfast was excellent, the bathroom looked a bit worn, the bed was super comfy and the room stocked plenty of tea, coffee, and biscuits; the evening meal was tasty and reasonably priced with good entertainment options, though the bathroom still needed attention.

The staff were friendly and helpful, the bed was comfortable and the shower worked well, but the room looked very dated and there was no hairdryer.

“Good starting point for St Cuthberts Way”

The location was great and the room and bathroom were spacious; the hotel still feels grand even if a bit tired, the toilet paper was excellent, the bed was comfy, breakfast was good, and the bar was welcoming. The only downside was that the shower was combined with the bath, though it was adequate.

“Great food, staff and atmosphere. Rooms a bit mixed.”

The evening staff were very friendly, especially the solo bar lady who, despite being busy, handled our dinner questions, booked us breakfast, and helped with menu choices while serving six other guests—she was impressive. Breakfast was nice, featuring homemade sausage, and we had a vegan friend who appreciated the clear vegan options. Dinner and breakfast were both good. However, our room in the older part of the hotel was far from reception, had only a skylight and no external window, making it feel claustrophobic; it should have cost less than our daughter's nicer room. The shower and bathroom were fine, but the mattress was past its sell‑by date and we spent the night trying not to fall out as the edges collapsed. The breakfast waitress took a long time to take our order.
