The area was fine, but the hotel threw a £20 dog fee at us that wasn’t mentioned on the website; I only learned about it after emailing the hotel. On arrival, we were told a large reception was happening and we could only get an evening meal at 5.30 pm if we booked in advance; otherwise it was a potluck after 7.45 pm. This should have been disclosed when booking, otherwise we’d have chosen elsewhere. The inn is in a remote spot, making it hard to grab wine with your meal without heading to Reeth or Tan Hill. The room’s last cleaning date was unclear; opening the door, my partner said it smelled like an old church. The room was clean and the beds comfy, but the décor didn’t match the £175.50 “Superior room” price plus the £20 dog fee. It had two beds, a sideboard, a couple of chairs, basic channel TV, and a wardrobe. The evening meal was decent but pricey; a small circular steak, mushroom and ale pie with a bit of veg cost over £20, while my partner’s sea bream was reasonable. I asked for an extra small jug of gravy for a medical reason—normally free elsewhere—and it was added to the bill at £1, which was disappointing. The next morning’s breakfast was over £310 for bed‑breakfast and evening meal; the bacon, black pudding, and sausage were dry, pre‑cooked, and kept warm, and most of it ended up in the dog. Overall, it felt like a rip‑off.
