The exterior looked old‑fashioned, but once inside it felt clean and pleasant. The sliding door to the open‑air bath didn’t open easily, which was a real hassle.

The onsens were clearly the highlight and truly surpassed what we expected. A few onsen details weren’t obvious from the website but turned out to be nice surprises: there are several separate outdoor bath areas, and although they switch gender daily, each gender always has at least one outdoor and one indoor space available. Private onsen rooms can be booked for couples or families, which is great since the main onsens are gender‑separated. The outdoor onsens overlooking the snow‑covered valley were magical. The breakfast was outstanding, and it differed on the two mornings we stayed. The room was quite spacious, and the overall quality of the room interior and hotel facilities was high. The value is excellent when rooms drop to 20,000 Y per night (taxes included) for two people in winter. The hotel’s isolation is part of its charm, but it’s a 20‑minute drive to the nearest town, and almost nothing is open after 8 pm (this was winter, so summer might differ). Dining options beyond the hotel’s set menu—priced over 10,000 Y per person—are very limited. At least there are plenty of vending machines on site for drinks and snacks.
