This was an amazing treat! Service is superb. Food is fresh and wonderful. The view is nice. The onsen (private and public) are excellent! Sauna is perfection. Everything about this place was magic

The room was fine, but there was no restaurant, no bar, and most of the food was raw.

Wow! Gen Hakone Gora was the highlight of our two weeks in Japan, even though we only stayed two nights; we instantly knew we should have booked more. The place was exactly what we needed—peaceful, relaxing, and far from the city bustle. The view of the mountains from our room was beautiful. The onsen was spotless and well maintained, and the decor showed remarkable attention to detail. We enjoyed the tea, snacks, and wine in the lobby, and having kaiseki delivered to our room was a special cultural experience. Rai Sonu was the absolute best—so kind and attentive, present at every meal, and we felt like family by the end of our stay. Thank you again, Rai! Anyone considering a stay should book here; I’m already planning a return trip to Hakone and will stay at Gen Hakone Gora again. My mom, who doesn’t eat fish, was surprised how accommodating the kaiseki was and ended up loving her meals.

After a 12‑day trip to Japan, Gen Hakone Gora was the one disappointment; while the room and its comfortable spaces were lovely, the food, service, and overall experience were incredibly disappointing. The food was horrible, and the hotel’s layout forced us to stay in our rooms when we weren’t out and about. We had very little positive to say, though we appreciated the proximity to Gora and the car service to and from the train station. The meals were only served in our rooms, seemed pre‑prepared, and not fresh—morning breakfasts were all cold, including the coffee and my American eggs. Both my daughter and I felt nauseous after the first night, and the fish was definitely not fresh. Prior to this stay, we had amazing experiences at other ryokans, making this even more disappointing. The staff were sweet but spoke very little English, so communicating details was hard, and our attempts to improve the food did not result in any changes. This was the third disappointment given other reviews and the cost—absolutely not worth what we paid, and I wish I could get my money back.
