The place was funky, quirky, and charming, and I especially loved the veranda. The only hiccup was that I almost hit my head on the ceiling while in the shower.

I came in with a lot of expectations, but the reality was a nightmare. The towels were dirty, the bed was terrible, and there were no slippers in the bedroom. The TV didn’t work well, and the bed made noise every time I turned. The toilet was full of poop, the showers were broken, the tiny bathroom had a knot of a showerhead, the carpets were stinky and stained, and there was no parking at all.

A family event took me to San Rafael, and I booked a stay at the Panama Hotel in the Captain’s Quarters room with a private bathroom. I last visited the historic Panama in the early 1980s! If you’re after an upscale hotel with all the fancy amenities, this isn’t the place for you. But if you, like me, appreciate a spot with charm and antiquity, it’s a little offbeat and unconventional yet 100 % clean—book a room at the Panama. Next time I’ll definitely dine at the quaint restaurant; the menu made me wish I could stay longer. There’s also a wonderful bakery right next door, Armida’s Bakery, where I had the most delicious cherry almond morning roll and coffee. Everything they offered looked great and was so handy to have next door. I’ll definitely stay at the Panama again if I return to the area. A designated parking space would have been helpful, but since it’s a neighborhood that might not be possible. I found a spot nearby easily, and the streetlights helped, but I’d recommend bringing a flashlight or using your cellphone’s flashlight.

The décor feels rustic and old‑school, but the TV was broken, there was no air‑conditioning, and traffic noise was loud.
