“Beautiful views - basic accommodation - a place for the self-sufficient”
I stayed in a spacious apartment that was very sparsely furnished, offering great views but at a cost: you’ll definitely need a rental car, and you must be a confident driver to handle Madeira’s steep gradients, narrow passages, and uphill starts. Driving here isn’t for the faint‑hearted. The place feels more like an apartment rental than a holiday room; the landlord speaks no English and is often absent, which can be a bit tricky. It’s ideal for self‑sufficient travelers, but because it sits high up, everything else is out of walking distance—you’ll have to drive for groceries, shops, bars, and restaurants. The high hill gives you stunning vistas, but it also places busy roads and highways right below, so expect traffic noise and barking dogs and crowing cocks.
