I appreciated how easy it was to get a room, but the place was unbearably hot because there was no air‑conditioning, just a tiny fan. We had to buy another fan to cope with the heat, and it felt better outside.

I spent a few days exploring the area, and Portugal was at its best with great food, friendly locals, and pristine beaches. The crowds were thin and the geological trails were amazing. If you travel with a pet and are comfortable in a camper, it's fantastic. You do need to bring warm clothes, and the ocean can be fierce, but the waves are spectacular. Driving is necessary, but even just to see the sunsets, it’s worth it.
