The property is spacious and sits right next to the shuttle stop that heads into town and to the train station, and the host was sweet and drove us to the slopes every morning.

The place was beautiful and spotless, a cozy and roomy haven after a day on the slopes, and Yumi was an absolutely incredible host who made our stay memorable.

Yumi is a warm, welcoming host, and the guest house at New Hoshiba sits just across the street from the main inn; it comfortably housed our group of 6 with 3 people upstairs on futons and 3 downstairs on twin beds, and I imagine it would fit a family of 2 adults and 2–4 kids. Breakfasts were amazing and worth the cost of reserving in advance, giving me energy for skiing and snowboarding; alternatively, markets in Iiyama supply ingredients for homemade meals, and the kitchen is well equipped. A drying room is available for ski gear, and we shipped in advance with Yamato transport. If staying here, I recommend at least a little Japanese – Yumi was gracious about my limited ability, and Google Translate helps. Free laundry is in the main inn with two washing machines, one dryer, and a drying room. ありがとうございます、ゆみさん! The location is important: it’s a ~20 minute walk from Nozawa Onsen town or a 4 minute drive, and parking is limited in the evenings. I liked being away from the bustle, but if you need a short walk to the slopes or town, this isn’t ideal. Logistics: rides are provided to ski – we were driven by Yumi, who fit 6 people and gear in a truck; we chose 7am breakfasts and an 8am ride, with rides scheduled up to 10am. After skiing, a free resort shuttle drops you near the P3 parking stop, about a 4 minute walk. If you drive up, P1 parking is free on weekdays, a small fee on weekends, and you must leave before 6pm or they’ll send search and rescue. After 5pm, hosts at New Hoshiba give rides to/from the onsen town, so schedule ahead. Having our own car made this stay great, and we even dined in Iiyama one night.
