I was thrilled with everything from the location and vibe to the amenities and prices, but the mattress left something to be desired.

YHA Grasmere Butharlyp Howe, a Victorian mansion in Lakeland’s Grasmere, offers sweeping fells and valley views. Guests dine on home‑cooked meals, cook in self‑catering kitchens, or enjoy the on‑site café. Rooms feature bunk beds, a games room, and free Wi‑Fi. Nearby, Dove Cottage, Grasmere Lake, and scenic walking trails lie within a 15‑minute walk.

The location was good, the staff were friendly, and the kitchen and other communal facilities were good. Parking was limited and the beds were noisy when somebody moved in the night.

The beautiful setting, excellent facilities, welcoming staff, and plenty of relaxing spots made this a great value; we stayed in a private bunk room that shared a bathroom.

The showers were impressively hot and powerful, though a broken plug socket in the room meant only one outlet for a four‑person bunk.

The hostel sits just a 5‑minute walk from bus stops, with frequent buses every 20 minutes between Windermere and Grasmere and a steady flow between Keswick and Kendal; shops, cafés, and a Co‑op are also nearby. The grounds and hostel location are quiet with nature at your doorstep. We stayed in the annexe, room 15, for four nights, and the toilet and shower were next door, so we never had to queue in the main building, which hosts only a few guests. A well‑equipped kitchen with ovens, hobs, microwave, fridges, and freezers is in the same building, so no need to walk to the main area, and there’s a cozy lounge to unwind after a day in the scenic Lakes. We met several interesting, like‑minded people and the staff were helpful. A YHA signpost in the village itself would have been useful for walkers, and while there is Wi‑Fi, it can be a bit erratic.
