Speedo cooked well, offering several different breakfasts and a great dinner that accommodated our dietary needs. The property, listed as on the mainland, actually sits on a beautiful island in the lake. When Speedo mentioned we’d need a boat, I was a bit worried about being stuck with only the hotel restaurant and pricey amenities, but he gave me good prices for a canoe and a short walk‑tour of the island, which was a nice touch on our first evening. The bed was comfortable, though the mosquito net was too small to seal the room, and the room was clean; the balcony view was amazing. The only real issue was the rustic ensuite toilet—long‑drop style, hole‑in‑the‑ground—whose strong smell made it hard to sleep at times; a room without a bathroom might have been better. There was also no drinking water; we had to use heavy filters, and the water from the hand‑washing jug had a strong acrid taste. I’d recommend bringing plenty of drinking water. I had asked about extra charges for getting to the property and was told the boda drivers would charge 12k each way (a bit pricey for a boda, but the road was long, uncomfortable, and bumpy—perhaps a taxi would be better). The boat ride from the jetty to the island was free, but the return cost an additional 20k, even though Speedo was heading into town. Overall, it was worth it and I’d probably do it again to experience Lake Bunyoni, but future guests should know all the extra costs up front.
