The pub’s community vibe, food, and service were all great. The bunk room is simple, clean, and comfortable, making it an ideal base for walking in Dartmoor. The cooling unit on the pub wall was loud at times in bunk room No 6.

I love the pub’s location and ambiance; it feels like traveling back in time. It’s a very beautiful place. No Uber, though.

Friendly staff and the pub crowd were great, and we caught two World Cup matches on the big screen set up for the occasion. The church and cemetery next door were peaceful, though the tiny village had no real shop. From there you can start several rambling routes—toward Drogo Castle, River Teign, or the 360° views from the bare remains of Cranbrook Castle. My “dorm” room was tiny, with a bunk bed, kettle, chair, tiny table—probably an old stable—surrounded by thick stone walls. The toilet and showers were just a few steps outside. Free safe parking was available, and the overall atmosphere was lovely. I knew there was no breakfast, so I planned around that. The only unpleasant surprise was the pub kitchen refrigeration units across from my room, which loudly cycled on for about 10 seconds every 5 minutes, 24/7. I was exhausted enough to sleep through the noise at night, but as my sleep became lighter by 4 am, the jarring sound woke me and kept me from falling back asleep—both mornings. Bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.
