A useful stop for the Coast to Coast walk with lovely staff and basic “bar food”; the bedrooms are clean and comfortable but quite small. We booked Bed and Breakfast but there is no breakfast available; the hotel does not serve breakfast in the off season. A café in the village opens at 9, which was too late for us long‑distance walkers who wanted to leave earlier, and we were mis‑sold as BnB by the hotel.

The staff were friendly and helpful, but the location was not great and I expected more in the village than just the pub and chocolate shop. The room was very hot; we tried to lower the radiators but the valves didn’t work, and the window got stuck open and couldn’t be closed. The bathroom shower had black mould around the tray, the tiles on the walls were dirty, and the overall feel was grubby, as were parts of the room around the windows; the bathroom also smelled damp.
