“1960s-style decor and not a place to stay if you want to sleep”
The staff were friendly, but the hotel clearly looked like it was last renovated in the 1960s, with anaglypta covering the walls. I know you’ll think, “Why didn’t you check the photos and reviews first?” and I’ll never repeat that mistake. It was the worst hotel experience I’ve had in 18 years of work travel. I paid £156 for a room and expected quality. The shower had no thermostat, and you had to climb into a bath to shower. Everything was severely outdated. Dust was under the towel rail on the skirting board. The walls were paper‑thin, and the environment was not ideal. I was woken in the evening by a group of men returning to their rooms; in the next room the guest turned their TV very loud and fell asleep. I had to call reception, who knocked on the door and told me they would ring the room. The TV finally turned off at 4 am. I can’t believe that experience. I went down to breakfast to find wipe‑clean tablecloths that made me feel ill, and a seat at a table with my room number clearly displayed. If I had stayed a second night (which I wouldn’t have if I’d booked two nights, I would have left), my room number would have been visible to all guests, even though I was a solo female traveller! How security‑conscious. I only ordered toast for breakfast because I didn’t feel like eating; the soup I had for lunch the day before was bland and tasteless, so I ordered toast. The toast was toasted on only one side, and the bread was about 2 mm thick. No compensation, refund, or anything was offered for the terrible stay.
