The friendliness of the host Mike and the location made it easy to go to Chester Zoo. The room was a bit cramped.

Bowman Lodge, a family-run Victorian guesthouse, is nestled near historic Chester. The city centre, with its Roman walls and Tudor buildings, is a 20-minute walk away, while the train station is within 10 minutes. Rooms feature TVs, tea and coffee facilities, and en suite bathrooms. Private parking and proximity to Chester Zoo, Blue Planet Aquarium, and Grosvenor Museum make it an ideal base.

Close to everything needed, including the city centre and rail station. The owner was lovely and helpful, giving us plenty of information about the area. The property is cosy with a vintage vibe that may seem outdated, but I think that’s intentional. The pillows on the bed were lovely and everything in the room worked perfectly. Tea, coffee, a kettle, and a working TV were provided. The toilet and basin were well cleaned, but the tiles behind the door and the surrounding area could use a bit of a scrub. There was some limescale around the shower and a dirty mirror, but overall the room was not dirty—just a few tweaks needed.

Parking was free and convenient, and Mike, the owner, was friendly. The room was spacious, and it was close enough to the town to walk. The towels and fitted sheet could use a refresh.

Everything met my expectations.

The location was great, and check‑in was smooth with good communication from the host. The furniture and décor felt somewhat mismatched and dated, and the dark décor upon entry made the place feel a bit gloomy and less welcoming than it could have been. Although everything worked, a few small updates or investments in the room would have made it feel more comfortable and inviting. Unfortunately, the mattress wasn’t particularly comfortable. There was also a slight smell in the room, though I couldn’t pinpoint its source—it might have been the bed, bathroom, or flooring. Since I mainly used the accommodation as a base for changing and sleeping, I didn’t investigate further. Overall, I understand that prices can rise during race weekends, and the accommodation did its job. However, outside of a race weekend, I think there might have been more modern B&B or hotel options locally for a similar price. Because of that, I didn’t feel it offered particularly good value for money on this occasion.
