“Wir kommen nicht wieder!”

We were looking for a place with breakfast near HarzDrenalin in Elbingerode and ended up at Gästehaus Tanne, which turned out to be a church-run senior home. The setup was far more basic than described on the site, and the breakfast was the only thing that worked; everything else felt unsuitable for vacationers. The whole property smelled overwhelmingly of disinfectant, and the only lively spot was a Greek restaurant. In the evenings there was no social space at all. I wonder how the price is broken down for such minimal room amenities and hospitality. We’re really disappointed that this church senior home, spa, is marketed as a normal lodging for holidaymakers.

The hotel’s quiet setting makes it a great starting point for hikers, and the spa card lets you use local public transport, so you don’t have to drive on longer trips. The value for money is good, and that satisfied us.

The house is marked by silence, calm, and reflection, with staff who are extraordinarily friendly. The room’s furnishings are nice, and the transport links are excellent, with a bus stop right outside the front office. The breakfast, however, is very simple and limited; there’s no hot portion, and eggs only appear every two or three days. The TV remote lacks teletext.

“Ruhiger Ausgangspunkt für Erlebnisse und Wanderungen im Harz”

The accommodation is quiet, clean, and comfortable. Breakfast is great and the staff are very friendly. The mix of a senior home, youth group lodging, and hotel guests gives it a unique charm, as does the pervasive Christianity. Those of us who booked for the pool will be quite disappointed: the hours are very short and inconvenient—only one hour in the afternoon before breakfast and on the days we were there, and on a few days even an evening slot.
