The sulfur hot spring was excellent and didn’t have the strong disinfectant smell that other hot‑spring hotels have; however, the room was a bit small for a foreign family of four and there was no space to store suitcases.

The staff were all bright and courteous, creating a pleasant atmosphere, and the food was delicious.

The room was large, clean, and in a Japanese style, and the onsen was free to use; it’s worth booking meals because the local restaurants and shops were closed in the off‑season. The hotel feels a bit dated, the silicone seams in our bathroom were already black, and the sinks in the onsen were in poor condition.

The buffet breakfast had more items than I expected, which was great. The air conditioner was a bit noisy, though.

I spent a single night at Zao Onsen and it turned out to be a hidden gem during the off‑season when the north is cooler in summer. The hotel shuttle from the bus terminal picked us up, handled our heavy luggage, and we appreciated the free ride. The onsens were open 24 hrs and were empty when we visited. My room offered a lovely view of the trees and the surrounding nature. We loved it so much that we didn’t bother going to the other hotel branches to use their facilities. The meals were decent, but breakfast outshone dinner.
