“Nostalgic onsen town where you will meet the locals and great home base to go see the fascinating snow monkeys.”
The hotel sits in a historic building in a wonderful location, the staff are friendly, and a shuttle runs from Yudanaka Station to Jidokudani Monkey Park; when I arrived there was an extraordinary forest mushroom exhibition at Yudanaka Station. The restaurant is only open for breakfast, and the vegan granola on the menu is served with cow’s milk instead of plant‑based milk; soy milk can be requested but not enough is available for a latte. There are few vegan options in town for dinner, so it would make a big difference if the restaurant stayed open for dinner and offered a few vegan meals as advertised; instead I walked into Yudanaka town alone at night, which feels a bit spooky in some parts, and the area is small and rural with few taxis.
