Aqaba

Aqaba is Jordan's single coastal gateway, squeezed onto a short stretch of the Gulf of Aqaba. The city functions as a duty-free port, resort strip, and logistics hub. Life moves around the waterfront and dive sites along the southern highway. You come here to submerge in the Red Sea or break up desert travel between Petra and Wadi Rum.

Aqaba's culinary identity centers on Sayadieh, a coastal dish of fish cooked over spiced brown rice with pine nuts and cumin. While inland Jordan focuses on lamb and yogurt dishes like Mansaf, Aqaba relies on the daily catch from local fishers. You order fresh red snapper or sea bass by weight at local fish markets and pay a small fee to have it grilled on the spot.

Aqaba's position at the northern tip of the Red Sea made it a trade nexus connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. Known as Elath and later Ayla, it served as a port for copper trading, pilgrimage routes to Mecca, and maritime commerce across successive empires.

   The area operated as an early port and copper smelting center under King Solomon's trade network.

   Founding of Islamic Ayla

   Caliph Uthman ibn Affan established the fortified port city of Ayla outside the older Roman settlement.

   Battle of Aqaba

   Arab forces led by Auda Abu Tayi and T.E. Lawrence captured the Ottoman garrison in a surprise overland assault.

4. 2001

   Special Economic Zone

   Jordan designated Aqaba a duty-free special economic zone to spur resort and logistics investment.

Choose your location by your primary goal. Stay downtown for walkable local restaurants and budget accommodation. Book in Tala Bay or Ayla Oasis if you want private resort beaches, pools, and manicured grounds. Choose South Beach if daily scuba diving is your main priority.

• White minibuses depart from the central bus station to South Beach for under JOD 1.

• Aqaba has no metro or tram network. Taxis and buses handle all public transit.

Prices in Aqaba are lower than Amman due to duty-free status, but international resort enclaves charge Western hotel rates. Cash in Jordanian Dinars (JOD) is necessary for small eateries, taxis, and public beach amenities.
