Mura Venete
Over 5 kilometers of 16th-century limestone defensive walls. Walk the perimeter at sunset for clear views across the plain toward Milan.
Parleyに聞くイタリア
Two tiers of Italian urban history, connected by funicular.
introduction
Bergamo operates on two distinct levels separated by a steep hillside and an 80-meter elevation gain. Città Alta sits inside 16th-century Venetian ramparts, while Città Bassa stretches across the plain below. You move between them on foot or via a funicular railway operating since 1887. The city rewards travellers who balance Renaissance art and heavy Lombard cuisine with sharp vertical walking.
Airport to centre link
Line 1 ATB bus connects Orio al Serio Airport to Bergamo station and Città Alta in 20 minutes. A single 3-zone ticket costs €3.00.
UNESCO status
The Venetian Works of Defence surrounding Città Alta gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017.
Funicular timing
The lower funicular line gets crowded on weekend afternoons. Walk up via Via Porta Dipinta to bypass ticket queues.

Parleyに聞くfood
Bergamo cuisine prioritizes butter, maize, and pork over olive oil or fresh tomatoes. The signature pasta dish is casoncelli alla bergamasca, half-moon pasta stuffed with beef, pork, raisins, and amaretti crumbs, tossed in melted butter, pancetta, and sage leaves. Polenta taragna combines cornmeal with buckwheat and local Branzi or Formai de Mut cheeses, served alongside slow-cooked stews. Local bakeries produce polenta e osei, a sweet dessert made of sponge cake, marzipan, and chocolate birds mimicking a traditional game dish.

Florixc · Public domainTraditional trattorias prepare hot polenta taragna continuously from autumn through early spring, but lower-town spots serve it year-round.
La Marianna in Largo Colle Aperto invented stracciatella gelato in 1961 using crunchy chocolate flakes tossed into milk cream.

history
Bergamo evolved from a Celtic settlement into a strategic Roman municipality named Bergomum. Its geography—perched on the edge of the Alps overseeing the Lombard plains—made it a battleground between regional powers. Control passed to the Visconti family of Milan in 1331 before the Republic of Venice seized the city in 1428. Venetian rule lasted over three centuries, giving Bergamo its imposing fortress walls and architectural identity before Napoleonic troops reshaped the region.
Venetian Annexation
Bergamo joins the Republic of Venice, becoming its westernmost frontier post against Milanese expansion.
Rampart Construction
Venetian engineers construct massive stone walls around Bergamo Alta, demolishing hundreds of homes to complete the ring.
Napoleonic Era
French forces enter Bergamo, ending Venetian domain and integrating the city into the Cisalpine Republic.
Garibaldi's City
Over 170 Bergamasque volunteers join Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand, earning Bergamo the title 'Città dei Mille'.
where to stay
Choose your hotel based on whether you prefer evening atmosphere or transport logistics. Città Alta places you in historic surroundings, but vehicle access is restricted and luggage handling requires navigating stairs or cobblestones. Città Bassa offers seamless access to the train station, lower prices, and easier parking, with the funicular providing quick access to the upper quarter.
transport
Bergamo is exceptionally well-connected thanks to Milan Bergamo Airport (Orio al Serio) situated just 5 kilometers southeast of the center. Navigating Bergamo itself requires a mix of walking and public transit operated by ATB. The city transit network uses a zonal fare system covering buses, trams, and both funicular railways.
Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY)から
ATB Line 1 Airport Bus runs every 20 minutes directly to Bergamo Train Station and Città Alta.
Official taxis line up outside arrivals; fixed rates apply to downtown destinations.
Direct coach lines connect BGY airport to Milan Central Station every 15 minutes.
A standard 1-zone ticket covers Città Bassa and Città Alta. A 3-zone ticket (€3.00) is required for airport trips.
Trenord runs direct hourly regional trains from Bergamo Station to Milano Centrale in 48 minutes for €6.00.
The ATB 24-hour tourist ticket costs €8.50 and includes unlimited bus, funicular, and airport rides.
Città Alta operates strict ZTL (limited traffic) zones on weekends and evenings; unauthorized drivers face automated fines.
