Chattanooga

A river city built on ridge trails, rails, and fast fiber.

introduction

Overview

Chattanooga sits in a tight bend of the Tennessee River under Lookout Mountain. You move between a compact downtown and outdoor ridge trails in under fifteen minutes. The city turned its old industrial rail corridor into pedestrian walkways and river parks. You get deep outdoor access without giving up city dining and craft breweries.

Free downtown transit

The CARTA Downtown Electric Shuttle is free and connects the Riverfront to the Southside every 15 minutes.

Municipal gigabit network

Chattanooga built the first citywide municipal gigabit fiber internet network in North America.

Lookout Mountain booking

Reserve Ruby Falls and Incline Railway entry slots online to avoid two-hour wait times at peak windows.

food

Cast iron skillets and craft kitchens

Chattanooga dining anchors itself in Southern staples served alongside contemporary craft kitchens. Downtown and Southside concentrate the best dinner options within walking distance of each other. Expect cast-iron cornbread, slow-smoked pork, and regional trout on menus across every price point.Breakfast is serious business here. Local spots turn out buttermilk biscuits made from soft Southern wheat flour that does not toughen the dough. MoonPies originate right in town at Chattanooga Bakery, and you will find them integrated into local dessert menus.

history

A short history

Chattanooga developed as a key rail junction where rivers and mountain passes intersect. Its position made it a crucial strategic battleground during the American Civil War, controlling access into the Deep South. Industry dominated the city through the twentieth century, leaving heavy air pollution by the late 1960s.A massive civic cleanup redirected the city towards riverfront parkland and digital infrastructure. In 2010, Chattanooga's public utility launched the nation's first citywide 1-gigabit fiber network, attracting tech workers and light manufacturing.
