Dresden

Baroque grandeur across the Elbe from counterculture alleys.

introduction

Overview

The Elbe River splits Dresden into two distinct personalities. On the south bank, Altstadt holds reconstructed Baroque palaces and world-class museum collections. Across the river, Äußere Neustadt houses late-night pubs, street art, and independent businesses. You move between both sides easily using local trams or walking across the river bridges.

Airport to city on S-Bahn S2

The S2 train runs every 30 minutes from Dresden Airport basement station to Hauptbahnhof in 21 minutes. A local VVO single ticket covers the ride.

Historic center restored post-war

The Frauenkirche lay in ruins for decades as a war memorial before full reconstruction finished in 2005 using original salvaged stones.

Book Historic Green Vault early

The Historisches Grünes Gewölbe restricts entry to timed slot tickets that sell out weeks ahead. The New Green Vault requires no timed reservation.

food

Eierschecke, beer gardens, and Saxon staples

Dresden's food traditions turn on Saxon baking and hearty pub fare. Sächsischer Sauerbraten uses beef marinated in vinegar and spices, served alongside red cabbage and potato dumplings. Afternoon coffee focuses on Dresdner Eierschecke, a cake with yeast dough, cheesecake, and an egg-glaze layer.

  • Christstollen season

Protected Dresdner Christstollen is sold in certified bakeries from November through late December.

history

A short history

Dresden grew from a Slavic river settlement into the residence of Saxon electors and kings. Ruler Augustus the Strong spent the early 18th century funding grand Baroque architecture and importing fine art. In February 1945, Allied bombing destroyed the urban core, driving decades of post-war reconstruction.
