Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Two alpine towns bound by decree below Germany's highest peak.

introduction

Overview

Garmisch and Partenkirchen merged under political pressure for the 1936 Winter Olympics, but they retain separate town centers on opposite sides of the Partnach river. Garmisch holds the main shopping district and modern resort infrastructure, while Partenkirchen preserves traditional Lüftlmalerei frescoes along Ludwigstraße. The Zahnradbahn cog railway terminal is located only at the main station on the Garmisch side and does not extend into or connect the Partenkirchen side of town. Expect steep terrain, early business hours, and train-centric valley transit.

1936 Winter Olympics site

The town was created by merging Garmisch and Partenkirchen for the 1936 Games. The Große Olympiaschanze stadium still operates for winter ski jumping.

Local Gästekarte bus perk

Overnight visitors receive a Gästekarte card from hoteliers. It covers free rides on local white buses throughout the valley between Garmisch and Grainau.

food

Mountain taverns and Werdenfels fare

Dining in Garmisch-Partenkirchen centres on hearty Werdenfelser regional cuisine designed for heavy mountain activity. Local specialties rely on pork, game from the surrounding forests, and alpine cheeses from nearby valley dairies.Gasthäuser along Ludwigstraße serve slow-roasted Krustenbraten with potato dumplings and local Werdenfelser Landbier. On mountain huts, daytime menus pivot to Kaspressknödel soup and Brettljause cold boards eaten on sun terraces.

  • Warm kitchen windows

Traditional Gasthäuser serve warm meals strictly between 11:30–14:00 and 17:30–21:00. Kitchens close promptly between service shifts.

  • Mountain hut cash

Huts above the lift line like Gamshütte and St. Martinshütte accept cash only due to limited cellular terminal coverage.

  • Shared table culture

In busy rustic taverns like Zum Röss'l, joining larger tables with existing guests is standard practice during peak dinner hours.

transport

Getting around

The town center is easily navigable on foot, but reaching mountain lift stations and nearby lakes requires local transit. The Bayerische Zugspitzbahn rack railway runs through the valley, connecting Garmisch station to Hausberg, Kreuzeck, Grainau, Eibsee, and the Zugspitze glacier platform.Local green-and-white municipal buses run frequent valley routes. Hotel guests ride these local buses free of charge by presenting their municipal Gästekarte.

Munich Airport (MUC)から

  • Train2h 15m€26–36

Take S-Bahn S1 or S8 to Munich Hbf, then transfer to the hourly RE6 or RB61 regional train.

  • Private transfer1h 30m€180–220

Pre-booked vehicle door-to-door via the A95 autobahn. Rates jump during weekend winter traffic.

  • Show your visitor registration card (Gästekarte) to bus drivers for zero-fare transit on local municipal routes.

  • Standard Deutsche Bahn train tickets are not valid past Grainau on the Zugspitzbahn line. A separate Zugspitze ticket is required.

  • Local valley buses decrease frequency sharply after 19:00. Plan return trips from Partenkirchen or Grainau accordingly.

  • The dedicated Eibsee-Bus offers a faster road route from Garmisch station to the lake than the cog railway.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Zugspitze weather check

Check summit webcams at the Zugspitzbahn base station before buying tickets. Cloud cover often blankets the peak while the valley stays clear.

  • Bayern-Ticket rules

The regional Bayern-Ticket covers regular trains to Garmisch station and local public buses, but it is not valid on the Zugspitzbahn rack railway.

  • Gorge seasonal closures

Partnachklamm closes during high meltwater periods in spring and ice clearance in late autumn. Check the municipal gorge status online daily.

  • Eibsee shuttle timing

Parking lots at Eibsee fill before 09:30 on summer weekends. Take the Eibsee-Bus from Garmisch station to avoid turnarounds at the lake gate.

  • Sunday shop closures

Supermarkets and retail shops close on Sundays per Bavarian law. Bakeries and mountain huts operate normally throughout the weekend.
