Lausanne

Steep hills, lake views, and Switzerland's driverless metro.

introduction

Overview

Lausanne climbs sharply from the shore of Lake Geneva up into wooded hills. The steep gradient shapes how you explore, so you take the M2 metro uphill and walk down. Expect terraced vineyards, lake panoramas, and a compact cultural hub around the train station. Your knees do real work here unless you plan your routes carefully.

Free public transit pass

Overnight guests receive the free Lausanne Transport Card. It covers unlimited travel on the M1, M2, and urban buses for your entire stay.

UNESCO terraced vineyards

The Lavaux vineyard terraces sit ten minutes east by train. They hold UNESCO World Heritage status for eight centuries of winemaking.

Driverless metro strategy

The city sits on a steep slope. Ride the M2 metro up to Epalinges or Cité, then walk down to the lake to save your legs.

food

Lakeside perch and Vaudois sausage

Lausanne eating centers on Canton Vaud traditions and Lake Geneva catches. Filets de perche served with lemon and tartar sauce are a lakefront staple. Cabbage-flavoured pork sausage, known as saucisse au chou, appears on winter menus served alongside leeks and potatoes in the dish called papet vaudois. Chasselas white wine from Lavaux provides the regional pairing for cheese fondue.

  • Try papet vaudois in winter

Order this smoked sausage dish at traditional bistros like Café du Grütli between October and March.

  • Eat perch in summer

Lake Geneva perch peaks in summer. Confirm with the restaurant that fish comes fresh from the lake rather than frozen imports.

  • Taste Chasselas wine

Order a glass of dry Chasselas white wine made from the nearby Lavaux vineyard slopes.

history

A short history

Lausanne grew from a Roman settlement named Lousonna on the lake shore to an episcopal hilltop city in the Middle Ages. The bishop's seat shifted up the hill for defense, creating the medieval Cité district. Bernese rule in 1536 brought Protestantism and German-speaking bailiffs to the French-speaking region. The arrival of the International Olympic Committee in 1915 established Lausanne as a global sports headquarters.

where to stay

Where to stay

Choose your neighbourhood based on elevation and transit access. Ouchy offers flat waterfront walks but requires a metro ride to the city center. Cité places you close to historical sites, but steep cobblestones make luggage transport difficult. Staying near Sous-Gare balances quick train connections with quiet streets.
