A short history
The Chilean government sponsored German immigration in 1852 to establish agriculture in the southern rainforest. Settlers cleared thick Valdivian wilderness to construct sawmills, farms, and timber houses built with local alerce shingles. The arrival of the railroad in 1913 transformed Puerto Varas from a small farm port into the primary travel hub for Lake Llanquihue.
