Pushkar sits around a holy lake on the edge of the Thar Desert. Life moves along 52 stone ghats and tight bazaar lanes where motorbikes compete with wandering cows. It is a strict vegetarian and alcohol-free pilgrimage town. Navigating it takes patience, sturdy sandals, and direct refusal of pushy vendors.
Arrival from Ajmer
Take a local bus or taxi over the Snake Mountain pass from Ajmer station. The 15km drive drops you directly at Marwar Bus Stand.
Sacred holy town
Pushkar Lake is one of five sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus. Meat, eggs, and public alcohol are strictly banned townwide.

During November Kartik Purnima, hotel rates quadruple. Book six months ahead or visit two weeks earlier for normal prices.

Sweet malpuas and street falafel
Pushkar is strictly vegetarian and eggless by town law. Local food centres on Halwai Gali sweets, led by hot malpua—deep-fried batter dipped in saffron sugar syrup. A long-standing traveler community created a secondary food scene: street stands along Sadar Bazaar sell pita rolls stuffed with falafel, hummus, and fresh salad.

A short history
Hindu tradition names Pushkar Lake as the spot where Lord Brahma dropped a lotus flower. Positioned on desert trade routes, the town evolved into a major pilgrimage center. Most current temple structures date from the 18th century onward after earlier medieval destructions during regional conflicts.

Pushkar has no commercial airport or major train station. All transit runs through Ajmer, 15km away across the Nag Pahar hill pass. Inside Pushkar, vehicle traffic is blocked on central bazaar streets, making walking the primary way to move.
