Rishīkesh sits along the Ganga, though the river enters the northern Indian plains at Haridwar, about 20 km downstream. The town runs on two parallel tracks: spiritual pilgrimages along the riverbank and adventure sports in the rapids north of town. Shared auto-rickshaws and footbridges connect the main zones on either side of the Ganga. Expect dry, meat-free menus throughout the municipality by strict local ordinance.

Choose your location based on bridge access and noise levels. The eastern riverbank has motorable road access for cars and taxis via the Ganga Barrage and Neelkanth routes and is ideal for quiet retreats, while the western bank permits cars and offers easier road transport.
