A short history
Roman armies conquered the hilltop settlement of Toletum in 192 BCE. Visigothic kings made Toledo their national capital in the sixth century. Islamic rule began in 711 and established a thriving center for metalwork and textiles. Alfonso VI captured the city in 1085, ushering in centuries of coexisting Jewish, Christian, and Muslim scholars.
